Multi-platinum country singer/songwriter Billy Currington drops his seventh studio album King Of The World today via MCA. Produced by Carson Chamberlain, the 10-track project has Currington returning to his original sound – full of upbeat hits and catchy lyrics. Listen to the full album HERE.
“This album is about getting back to my country roots,” says Currington. “It all started when I went to lunch with my buddy Carson Chamberlain – we worked on the first five albums together. We were just talking about life and catching up since I had not seen him in about ten years. The conversation led us to want to make an album together again and from there it was pure excitement.”
Currington co-wrote multiple tracks on the album alongside legendary songwriters like Scotty Emerick and Dean Dillon. Other contributors include Paul Overstreet, Ben Hayslip, and Troy Jones, who previously worked with Currington on top hits including “People Are Crazy” and “Pretty Good At Drinking Beer.”
AUDIO CUT X CUT:
King of the World. King of the World is a song that I’ve had in my back pocket, so to speak, for several years now. It was written by Troy Jones, who wrote People Are Crazy. I’m Pretty Good At Drinking Beer. I can name so many other songs. A good friend from Alabama, but he gave me that song so long ago, and I always was like, I’m gonna record it on this album, and then the album would pass, and I didn’t. For whatever reason, it didn’t work out for like five albums in a row. And then getting back together with Carson was uh really the reason it felt right all of sudden. So I sent it to him. He’s like, oh yeah, I remember that song. And we both decided, yeah, let’s lay this one down first. So that’s why it’s first on the album.“
“Run For My Whiskey, a song that just showed up in my email one day. I don’t even remember who sent it. It’s been so long. And most of the time I’ll download them and put them on my phone. And then I’ll take them to my truck and on my way to my grandma’s house or wherever I would be going, which would be an hour drive, I’d just go through music. And I remember leaving the neighborhood where I live and putting that song on and thought… Okay, this thing’s got a great feel. I love this. And I just found myself listening to it over and over. It was just one of those songs that was a no-brainer. It felt like it belonged on this particular project.“
“Old school. Now this was a song that I started writing at the house just by myself one day out of the blue. It just came to me and singing a melody and recording lyrics in my phone. And it wasn’t long after that, maybe a couple weeks, I was headed down to Key West to meet up with Scotty Emmerich and Dean Dillon. And you you always just start talking about life and eventually someone will be like, well boys, we need to start writing the song so we can get to fishing. And just remember bringing that one out and sang them the melody I had. And of course, Scotty Emmerich and Dean Dillon, the magic they have, just kind of took it from there. And we just finished the song right then. And I thought it was special enough to make it on this album. So that’s why it’s on here.”
“Burning The Midnight Gasoline, a song I’ve known about for a while. My buddy Scotty Emmerich, he had actually recorded it, because he was the writer on it, and put it on all the outlets. And I was just going through his songs one day, because I hadn’t heard some of his new stuff that he was putting out. And I ran across Burning The Midnight Gasoline. And I called him up, and I was like, man, are you the only one who recorded this song? Has anybody else? He’s like, nah, just me. So I didn’t say, okay, I’m gonna record that. I just thought, I’m gonna record that. So eventually when we got together with Carson, I played it for him and he loved it just as much as I did. So we laid it down and that’s why it’s on the album.”
“One Thing I Ain’t Been. Another song that came to me through email. And when I first saw it, I didn’t recognize the person that sent it to me. So I didn’t even know if I was even gonna click on it, to be real honest. But a few days later, I’m like, I don’t know. It might not be spam, it might be something. So I downloaded it and I’m sure glad I did, because it’s become one of my favorite songs on the album, for sure. It’s the one that I see that would sound really good on the radio.“
“Well, one day I was back at the house and Carson knew I was off the road, kind of in a quiet spot. So he calls and he’s like, hey man, I got a song I’m about to send you. think you’re really gonna like it. Written by one of your favorite writers, Paul Overstreet. Of course I was like, send it on for sure. And a few minutes later I got it and played the song. And that was one of the songs I just played over and over and over. And by the end of the night, later on, I called him up and was like. Well, you done sent me another goal and for sure I can’t pass up. I’d be down to lay this one down if you are. So we both agreed it definitely fit the album. So that’s how Georgia and Alabama made the album.“
“Anchorman. Anchorman is a song I recorded about three years ago. And I think at the time we was recording just to put something out. It wasn’t really to put on an album or for any other reason, just to get a song out there and um written by one of my favorite writers and really good friends, Scotty Emerick. Of course, we just kept going. Carson and I just kept recording songs which became a 10 song album. And as we were going through, and we actually had a couple more songs that didn’t make the album that we recorded. We had to narrow them all down to 10. And once we got to Anchorman, we both knew that we couldn’t leave this one out, even though it had already been put out there. But it fits well on the album.”
“Bourbon Sunset. That song came about one afternoon. I don’t drink bourbon. I don’t drink whiskey much at all. Hardly ever, I’d say, but somehow I had a little bit in a glass one afternoon and the sun was setting and I just somehow held it up and put the bourbon in the sunset and took a picture and posted it on Instagram. And of course I wrote Bourbon Sunset as the little title to it. A buddy of mine in Hawaii is like, sounds like your next song, if you don’t write it, I know somebody will. And I thought about that that night. I was like, he’s probably right. So I just started singing Bourbon Sunset, Whiskey Blue, and just kept going and thought I’d better record this on my phone before I forget it. And I did it, laid it down, and then weeks went on and ended up Key West, Florida with Dean Dillon and Scotty Emerick. Of course Dean, you boys got anything you wanna talk about today, write about? And that song popped in my mind. I was like, I don’t know, what do you think about this? And just started playing that to Scotty and Dean and it just went from there. Finished the song that day. So there it is on the album, Bourbon Sunset.“
“Southern Star. Now the first time I heard this song, I was on a fly fishing trip out in Colorado with my buddy Noah and he’s well steeped in music. He knows a lot of music, a lot of great music. And he was just playing so many songs that I had never heard before on our ride out to the fly fishing spot. And he played that one. I was like, hey man, can you play that one again? And of course we ended up playing that song 40 times on that trip or more. And I was quietly in my mind going, I think I want to put my version down of this song when I get back to the house, because we were in the process of recording at that time. So I sent it to Carson, and he uh naturally felt the same way that I feel. Great song, great feel, and let’s give it a shot. Written by one of my favorite writers, Brent Cobb, Southern Star.“
“Solid Gold written by Miles Miller. Miles is a very talented drummer, singer, guitar player. And it was another song that my buddy on the same trip, Noah, was playing, all these songs. And just like Southern Star, he’s playing Solid Gold. I was playing that one again, and playing it again. Had the same story as Southern Star. It was just something I thought, man, I want to…I want to do a version of this one too. So I sent it to Carson and here we are. Last song on the album, Solid Gold.”
